How to find a general direction without a compass ?

Remember that: the Sun rises from the East and sets in the West.

Stick a 1m pole vertically on the ground. Mark the first tip of the shadow with a small pebble. After half an hour to one hour, mark the second tip shadow position with another pebble. The first shadow position is the West and the second position is the East. Standing with left hand facing West and right hand facing East, your front body is looking at North and your back South direction.

At sunrise over the horizon, the sun marks the East direction.

At sunset over the horizon, the sun marks the West.
